Oman en Liberté - Fly & Drive between Deserts, Mountains and Ocean

Explore Oman at your own pace, from emerald wadis and golden desert dunes to hilltop villages and wild coastline. An authentic and serene journey to the heart of a preserved and enchanting sultanate.

Days 1 & 2

By car! (Muscat / Nizwa - 190 km)

Flight from France to Muscat
Welcome by our correspondent, briefing and handover of your 4x4 at the airport. On leaving Muscat, opportunity to visit the famous Amouage perfume factory (except Fri and Sat). Then drive to Nizwa, the ancient capital of the Sultanate. Check-in at the hotel and free afternoon to visit the fort (closes at 4pm), one of the most beautiful in the country, or stroll through the souks, renowned for their silver jewelry and khanjars, curved daggers typical of the Arabian Peninsula.
Our tips for this day: early in the morning and on Fridays only, at the gates of the Nizwa souks, you can visit the livestock market and attend the livestock auction in a unique atmosphere. Excursion to Bahla, famous for its potters and its majestic UNESCO-listed fort, and discovery of the lovely Jabrin Palace.
Then stop off at the Al Hamra oasis for a stroll through this old adobe village surrounded by date palms, where you can observe the traditional aflaj (a clever irrigation system originating in Persia) and visit the Al Safah House, a living museum dedicated to the Sultanate's popular traditions. On the way back, stroll through the charming village of Misfat, with its old adobe and stone houses nestled between canals and palm trees on the mountainside (P.D).

Day 3

Forts and oases (Nizwa)

Day 4

Heading for the desert (Nizwa / Wahiba - 200 km)

Off to the small Bedouin town of Sinaw and the village of Ibra, where on Wednesdays you can stroll through the lively women's market (open from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.). Then on to the Wahiba Sands, a sea of sand whose dunes can reach heights of over 200 m, and where a few Bedouin tribes still live.
Dinner and overnight in a camp in the heart of the desert (free access with your 4x4, or transfer organized by the camp - extra charge). (P.déj+Dîn)
In Sinaw, stop off at the market, where Bedouin communities from all over the region come to buy everyday products, crafts and livestock. Another colorful market is held on Thursdays only, from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Depart for Wadi Bani Khalid for a stroll through this picture-postcard oasis, whose emerald pools amid the rocks form pleasant natural pools.
Continuation to the charming port city of Sur, check-in at the hotel and free time to stroll through the languid Al Ayjah district or stop off at the shipyard, where the famous wooden dhows were once made (P.D).

Day 5

Oman between land and sea (Wahiba / Sur - 250 km)

Day 6

On the coast road (Sur / Muscat - 200 km)

On the way, enjoy a hike through the mineral landscape of Wadi Shab, a swimming break on the pretty beach of Fins, a stop at the curious turquoise water crater of Bimah or a detour to the fishing village of Quriyat. Check-in at the hotel at the end of the day. (P.déj)
Suggested visits: the superb mosque of Sultan Qaboos (closed on Fridays), a stroll along the corniche and through the souks of Muttrah, where incense still has pride of place, a look at the Al Alam Palace, flanked by two 16th-century Portuguese forts, and a visit to the Bait Al Zubair Museum.
Or visit the women of Sidab, a small fishing village near Muscat, to discover their responsible project based on the creation of local products such as shopping bags, clothes or decorative mattresses made from natural materials; during your visit, you can cook with the women and discover their culture and traditions. (Breakfast)
