The famous moais of Rano Raraku

A few months ago during a visit to Chile I took a 5 hour flight to Rapa Nui the magical Eater Island.

My adventure to Easter Island, or Rapa Nui, was an experience of a lifetime. Landing on this remote island, I immediately felt the mystical energy that surrounds the land, famous for its iconic moai statues and rich Polynesian culture.

I began my trip at Rano Raraku, the volcanic quarry where the moai were carved. Walking among these unfinished giants, some still embedded in the earth, was surreal. The sight of hundreds of moai scattered across the hillside brought the ancient history of the island to life. In the afternoon, I visited Ahu Tongariki, the largest ceremonial platform, where 15 restored moai stand in a row, facing inland—a breathtaking and iconic sight, especially as the sun began to set.

My second day was dedicated to exploring the island's natural beauty. I hiked to Rano Kau, a massive volcanic crater, with a view that stretched across the ocean and a deep crater lake below. At the top, I visited the ancient ceremonial village of Orongo, where the fascinating birdman cult was practiced. In the evening, I relaxed at Anakena Beach, with its white sands and palm trees—a rare tropical gem on this volcanic island.

On my final day, I immersed myself in the local culture. I visited the town of Hanga Roa, learning about Rapa Nui’s history and people at the Sebastián Englert Anthropological Museum. The day ended with a cultural performance, where traditional Polynesian dance and music brought the island’s spirit to life.

Three days on Easter Island was a perfect balance of history, nature, and culture. This isolated island holds more than just its moai—it is a living museum of the past, set against a backdrop of incredible natural beauty.
